This resource is an opportunity for educators to learn and understand how to use 21st century technology in our classrooms. It provides an understanding of how technology has progressed and how the safety, terms and conditions can be an issue to using technology. It provides reflection; What personal data do we give up using technology? How can we use technology safely in the classroom? What can we do to ensure the safety of our students?

The resource is split into six modules. These modules provide further links, tools and resources that can be used in the classroom. The resource seems to be catered to educators however, a few modules, for example: Who Owns the Data? and What Can I Do? are two modules that can be implemented into a lesson to better educate our students on censorship and safety tips when using and browsing on the web. The modules require a lot of reflection and provides questions that relate to our everyday use of technology. The modules use various forms of media including: web links, videos, and text. The modules also include the religion curriculum to ensure specific expectations set out in the curriculum are covered.

REFLECTION

As educators, it is important to understand and read through our school board’s mission and technology statement. It is also important to set expectations for your own classroom. In teacher’s college, we were given an assignment to create a list of standards we would want our students to use in our future classrooms. For example:

1. Students will not use Personal Electronic Devices (PED) during class time unless integrated into the lesson
2. Students should be using social media in an appropriate manner that reflects their morals and standards as Catholics
3. The school will not tolerate any mistreatment of peers, teachers, or others on social media, such as cyberbullying

4. The school does not hold teachers, school or board accountable for any loss of P.E.D’s
5. There will be no pictures or videos taken of other students and staff unless consent was given or a photography/video release form has been signed
6. Any passwords and personal information of others will not be shared unless consent was given for an educational purpose
7. School wifi is to be kept within the members of the school and are not meant to be shared with the public

We also created visions statements for our students…Students will be able to:

1. Self-regulate the use of their personal electronic devices with the proper intent of creating a more productive and enlightening educational experience to gain responsibility, citizenship, integrity and honesty as a member of the school community

2. Actively engage and participate in their classes using technology to further develop, explain, and analyze their ideas. This will allow students to create, demonstrate, and share innovative and thoughtful ideas in all subjects

3. Be successful and sustainable Catholic community members, well respected and recognized for their academic, extracurricular, and community excellence as well as developing the foundation necessary for those who aspire to become part of the Catholic community

4. Use technology in their art education to develop their creative process thinking skills in a new way. Specifically, dance students can create their own dance film using technology such as iPads and Apps like iMotion to create, demonstrate and share their final dance piece

An interactive form of using this resource in the classroom is having students create a video/poster and set of standards of what they think responsible 21st Century Shepherds look like. For example, in teacher’s college a classmate and I created a video demonstrating the proper ways of using technology in the classroom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FBaaAyEXMM&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=NatalieMontalvo

As educators, we need to strive to ensure all our students can self-regulate and monitor the use of their personal electronic devices with the proper intent of creating a more productive and enlightening educational experience to gain responsibility, citizenship, integrity and honesty as a member of the school community. In doing so, students will actively engage and participate in their classes using technology to further develop, explain, and analyze their own creative ideas. This will allow students to create, demonstrate, and share innovative and thoughtful ideas in all subjects. Our expectations and understanding of technology will benefit students and help them be successful and sustainable Catholic community members, well respected and recognized for their academic, extracurricular, and community excellence as well as developing the foundation necessary for those who aspire to become part of the Catholic community.
