Sample Lesson Plan #1: Everyday Dances

What does dance mean to you? How do the things we do everyday make us feel? How can the things we do everyday influence us?

In this lesson plan students will be able to:

1. Observe, and identify elements of dance used in choreographic pieces

2. Develop and contribute creative and thoughtful ideas within a group setting

3. Produce and demonstrate a choreographic piece using elements of dance to communicate feelings and ideas that relate to their everyday lives that are personally meaningful to them

Sample Lesson Plan #2: Dancing with Faith

What does Religion mean to you? What does the scripture reading remind you of in your life at this particular moment? How can dance be a way of demonstrating your faith to God? What are you the most thankful for today?

In this lesson plan students will be able to:

1. Identify phrases in scripture passages that generate feeling and emotions toward their faith

2. Develop and illustrate scripture passages through the movement of the body into a choreographic dance piece

3. Effectively communicate with group members and contribute thoughtful and original ideas

Sample Lesson Plan #3: Gumboot Dancing

How are the elements of dance used? How does your knowledge of different movements vocabularies help you learn new dance forms more easily? How can the movements of Gumboot represent the historical, social and cultural meanings being performed? How can the movement vocabulary from Gumboot dance inspire us to create our own compositions? What are the historical, social and cultural reasons why people perform the Gumboot dance?

In this lesson plan students will be able to:

1. Use dance vocabulary to develop and generate a choreographic dance piece

2. Demonstrate and perform a creative dance piece

3. Identify, explain, and discuss the historical, cultural and social meanings of the Gumboot dance form

What do you think of when you think of a grade nine student? Why do you think grade nines are ______?

 Why did you choose to move like this (reenact the movement) while terrified?

 

In this lesson plan students will be able to:

1. Create a choreographic dance piece through tableau

2. Explain how dance can be used to communicate messages about social justice

3. Explain how role is used to understand another perspective by taking on several other roles
